For the past few years in the comic book movie world, Marvel has stood atop of that mountain. The company was able to create their own cinematic universe which has been well received by fans across the globe. Fans eagerly awaited the response from DC Comics in the hope that the darker realm of comic book storytelling would translate to the big screen. And while the movies are not critically acclaimed as their rivals, two entities in the DC world have been able to stand tall among the backlash. Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Henry Cavill’s Superman. As of a few hours ago, one of those franchises will have to begin a new in the DC Universe.
It is being reported that Henry Cavill will not return to play the Man of Steel. Warner Brothers tried to get Cavill to have a cameo in the upcoming Shazam movie. The cameo did not happen due to talk breaking down between the two sides. And now WB wants to move in a different direction by working on a Supergirl movie in which Kal-El would be an infant. Coming off the heels of Justice League, it could be years before we would see any big screen presence for Superman. Plus, a source inside the studio believes that the Superman character is the equivalent to James Bond. Different actors can play the role, and people will not care.
Cavill leaving the DCU is a huge blow to the plans moving forward. Losing one of the big four will take its toll on the DCU. The question that needs to be asked is can the secondary characters carry the weight. The future of the DCU will fall on Aquaman, and possibly the Birds of Prey film that is in the works. Can the DCU recover from this blow? Only time and fans will be able to tell.
